This small town is a combination of tourist destination, retirement community, arts & crafts center, and bird-watching reconnaissance point. Patagonia Lake State Park is known worldwide for the 300 species of birds that migrate through or nest along their creeks and waterways. The Nature Conservancy's Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve is adjacent to the town. This site is the first project for the Nature Conservancy in Arizona. The town has several small restaurants and coffee shops, and one historic hotel. Patagonia also offers access to numerous hiking trails, including the historic Arizona Trail. Patagonia Trail Days is celebrated each April. In 1899, residents changed the town's name to Patagonia, after the mountain range that towers over the valley. |
