This small town is at the intersection of state routes 4 and 49, about 50 miles east of Stockton.  The town was named after shopkeeper Henry Angels in 1848.  Mark Twain based his short story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County on a story he claimed he heard at the Angels Hotel. In celebration of this heritage, many humorous frog motif statues are on display in this small town. Nearby New Melones Lake is the fourth largest man-made lake in California.
