Like its neighboring town Etna, Fort Jones is located in scenic, pastoral Scott Valley. The town is named from the frontier outpost once located less than a mile to the south of the city's corporate limits. Several famous Civil War generals resided in Fort Jones, including Ulysses S. Grant and Phil Sheridan. The Fort Jones Museum, located at 11913 Main Street, is open Memorial Day through Labor Day. It contains artifacts about the Karuks, the indigenous people who lived along the Salmon and the Klamath Rivers, and the miners, loggers and ranchers who displaced them. In the front of the museum is the Rain Rock, which a local Native American tribe is said to have used to control the weather. |
