Jamestown, California

Jamestown is one of my favorite 'gold rush' towns on the Route 49 corridor. This state route is appropriately numbered in reference to the California gold rush of 1849. I like several features of this town, including its authentic look, relatively small scale, and the adjacent railroad history park. The Railroad 1897 Historic Park has one of America's last authentic railroad roundhouses and has appeared in over 200 film and TV productions. Jamestown was named for a man from San Francisco named Col. George F. James, who set up a tent near Woods Creek selling food and supplies to the miners. There are many such gold-mining small towns along Route 49, but you don't want to miss this one. EARNS OUR HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION. |
