Sonoma, California
(pronounced sun-oh-muh)

Sonoma is not only the most attractive town center of any small town we have seen in California, but is also one of the prettiest downtown plazas we have seen in America. The plaza reflects Spanish influence, as it began with the Mission San Francisco Solano, founded in 1823 by Father Joseph Altimira of Spain. Sonoma's plaza is the largest in California. In the middle of the plaza sits the early-20th-century city hall, designed with four identical sides so as not to offend the merchants on any one side of the plaza. Near downtown is the Sonoma Traintown Railroad, with wonderful entertainment for children. Sonoma is located on Route 12 in the Napa Valley region. This small town hosts the Sonoma Valley Film Festival. EARNS OUR HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION. |
