Truckee lies high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, just off Interstate 80, north of Lake Tahoe.  This small town is near the infamous Donner Party cannibalism site. Truckee was named after a Paiute chief. His assumed Paiute name was Tru-ki-zo.  The Truckee area is popular for outdoor recreation, including snow skiing.  There are 7 ski areas within close proximity to Truckee. Amtrak, the national passenger rail system, provides service to Truckee.
