Yreka, California
(pronounced why-reek-uh)
Yreka lies in the picturesque Shasta Valley, just off Interstate 5 and only 22 miles south of the Oregon border. At an elevation of 2,600 feet, this small town avoids scorching summer temperatures and has a low, comfortable humidity level. Yreka has the distinction as one of the more oddly-names towns in California. This label was apparently taken from a Shasta Indian word meaning "north mountain" or "white mountain," a reference to nearby Mount Shasta. The palindrome Yreka Bakery was the topic of a Mark Twain story. Yreka is home to the Siskiyou County Museum. |
