This historic mining small town lies on Route 67 and is about 50 miles west of Colorado Springs.  Cripple Creek is one of the best examples of a restored mining town in the United States.  This renovation was made possible because of the gambling revenue generated after Colorado authorized Cripple Creek for legalized gaming.  During the gold-mining boom days, this now small town had a population of over 18,000 and produced a staggering $400 million in gold.  The Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad train departs from Cripple Creek and passes through several ghost towns and scenic mountain terrain.  Since 1999, this small town has hosted the Cripple Creek Film Festival, the first and only interactive film festival in the country.  Volunteers are chosen from the audience, put into costume, provided with lines and filmed. Cripple Creek is home to the Butte Opera House, a historic theatre that still produces shows year-round. EARNS OUR HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.
