This small town is situated on Apalachicola Bay and offers Gulf of Mexico activities such as fishing and beach combing. It is in one of the less populated areas of Florida. Therefore, Apalachicola is a quiet, sleepy, slow-pace-of-life type of relaxing small town getaway. More than 90% of Florida's oysters are harvested from Apalachicola Bay.
Every year during the first weekend of November, the town hosts the Florida Seafood Festival. The historic downtown Dixie Theatre continues to provide live performances for locals and tourists. Apalachicola is reminiscent of "Old Florida," a label many use to describe the feel of smaller coastal communities in the state. Southern Living magazine published a feature article 'Florida's Quiet Side' in February 2007. A lone blinking yellow light in this small town is sufficient to control the sparse downtown traffic.
