Pine Mountain, Georgia
The small town of Pine Mountain lies at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and serves as the gateway to Callaway Gardens. The 4,000-acre Callaway Gardens was created to provide a natural setting for education and recreational pursuits. The gardens that Cason Callaway opened to the public in 1952 have blossomed into a retreat with year-round floral displays, 63 holes of championship golf, fishing lakes, and an array of hiking and biking trails. Pine Mountain (previously called Chipley) is bisected by a railroad line running north and south through the town. On both sides of the track can be found retail shops and restaurants. The town also has a historic commercial district that includes restaurants, hardware stores, antiques stores, as well as other types of retail establishments. Pine Mountain also has numerous circa 1940s-50s "motels" that are single story and add to the town's character. Pine Mountain can be found on Route 27, 5 miles east of I-185 and 30 miles north of Columbus, GA.
