Most attractive oceanfront small towns on the Atlantic seaboard are overrun with tourists. St. Marys is not one of them. We have visited and photographed several small towns in this coastal area including Beaufort, SC, Jekyll Island, GA, Fernandina Beach, FL and St. Augustine, FL. St. Marys is by far the least trafficked. The local chamber of commerce describes this small town as “enchanting storybook setting on the St. Marys River beckons with white picket fences and Victorian Inns”. I think this is an accurate depiction. On the first Saturday each October, this small town celebrates the Rock Shrimp Festival. The St. Marys Submarine Museum is located on the St. Marys River. The nearby Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base houses eight Ohio-class submarines.
