Guttenberg, Iowa
(pronounced gut-in-burg)
This historic small town is nestled on a limestone bluff overlooking the mighty Mississippi river. We recommend the walking tour of 25 historic downtown buildings. As you can surmise by its name, Guttenberg’s early residents were German settlers, who are responsible for the many impressive limestone buildings in, and around this small town. The town takes its name from Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of movable type. A replica of a Bible he printed is on display at the public library. A favorite pastime in Guttenberg is watching eagles soar over the Mississippi River while strolling the town’s 2-mile River walk. In 2009, this small town was named one of ‘America’s 20 Prettiest Towns’ by the Forbes Traveler website. |
