Kalona is a small town Amish community, with several shops along the main street in the town center. Kalona claims to be the largest Amish settlement west of the Mississippi River. The village has a 25-acre park with a municipal swimming pool, playground and wooden shelters – impressive for such a small town. Attractions in this town include the Kalona Quilt and Textile Museum, the Kalona Historical Village, the Kalona Bakery and the Kalona Cheese Factory. The Wahl Museum is a tribute to the businesses, crafts, tools, and artistry that made Kalona. The Iowa Mennonite Museum and Archives is a repository of Mennonite records and artifacts. |
