Bar Harbor is the largest small town on Mount Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park, including Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the Eastern U.S. coastline. The College of the Atlantic is located in Bar Harbor. It offers a bachelor’s and master’s degree only in the field of human ecology. Acadia is one of the most heavily visited parks in the U.S. Bar Harbor has a gorgeous seaside location with small mountains as a backdrop. It is tourist-laden in summer months, therefore, we recommend you time your visit to just after Labor Day. It is a delightful small town with abundant shopping, lodging and restaurants with ocean views. If you have an aversion to crowds, we recommend nearby Northeast Harbor.
