Picturesque New England town. Walk down Sea Street to one of the prettiest sheltered harbors you will ever see, with small mountains in the background. Stroll among the tree-lined manicured residential streets and marvel at the mansions of the wealthy summer residents. Walk or bike a little further to Sargent Drive and the only fjord in the United States at the mouth of beautiful Somes Sound. For the biking experience of a lifetime, bicycle the Acadia National Park carriage roads from Northeast Harbor to Bar Harbor. The many miles of carriage roads were originally created for the recreational benefit of houseguests of oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller. Now they are maintained for public use including hiking, bicycling, horseback riding and winter cross-county skiing. These wide crushed-limestone paths encircle secluded lakes, traverse dense forests and open meadows and climb small mountains for spectacular views of the surrounding ocean. Horticulturists will delight at Asticou Gardens and Thuya Gardens. |
