This small town features a 1.5-mile river walk along the Manistee River in its downtown section. The river meanders under two drawbridges before it empties into Lake Michigan. The Water Bug provides boat tours of the river channel. For those landlubbers, hourly trolley tours of the small town commercial and residential sections are available in summer months. Manistee is the home of three factories on Lake Manistee, including Morton Salt, which operates the largest salt plant in the world.
Attractions in Manistee include the Historic Ramsdell Theatre, Little River Casino and numerous beaches and fishing spots.
Manistee is the county seat of Manistee County and is said to be derived from ministigweyaa, meaning “river with islands at its mouth.”
