Marshall, Michigan
For a landlocked Michigan location, this small town has a lot to offer. On the one end of town, you will be soothed with the sight and sounds of a fountain in the center of a well landscaped traffic circle. If I listed the amenities we think necessary for an attractive small town, Marshall has most of them. Museums, fine architecture, ample restaurants and boutiques can be found in this unusual small town. It is just a stones-throw from both interstate 69 and 94. Mackinac Island is the best water-based small town in Michigan; Marshall is the best in the interior. Marshall contains one of the nation's largest National Historic Landmark Districts, with over 850 designated buildings. Some of these structures are showcased in the town's annual historic home tour. Thus event is held the weekend after Marshall's Labor Day Festival and is the oldest historic home tour in the Great Lakes area.
