How did the chicken cross the road? HE COULDN’T IN PENTWATER MICHIGAN! If you want to play pedestrian Russian roulette, we dare you to cross the main street in this town. Unbelievably, there is not a single crosswalk or stoplight along the entire busy thoroughfare (US 31) through downtown. This is by far the least pedestrian-friendly town we have seen in America. Despite this significant reservation, we still recommend this town because of its attractive appearance, scenic location on Lake Michigan, plenty of shopping and other amenities. Many storefronts are adorned with flowers and provide tables/benches for sidewalk strollers. Its public restrooms are decorated with creative artwork. Frequent displays of historical signage help entertain and educate visitors about Pentwater’s heritage and architecture. For the benefit of anglers, there is a fish cleaning facility next to the marina at the end of Main Street.
The name Pentwater comes from Pent or Penned up waters. Pentwater Lake is two miles long and one-half to three-quarters of a mile wide. When in Pentwater, be sure to visit Mears State Park on the shore of Lake Michigan. Pentwater is home to the Pentwater Civic Band, which plays concerts every Thursday night during the summer, at the Village Green. In addition, the Village Green hosts weekly Tuesday night concerts, which are open to anyone wishing to play. When visiting this town, we recommend you wear a reflective fluorescent orange vest. For those suicidally-inclined, a monochromatic black-on-black ensemble after dusk is both fashionable and effective.
