Fort Benton, Montana

 |
Fort Benton is one of the more historic small towns in Montana. It lies on the bank of the Upper Missouri River, approximately 50 miles northeast of Great Falls. Because of its wild and scenic location, it is a favorite base camp for canoeists and kayakers along the Upper Missouri River. The 1805 Lewis and Clark expedition camped at the Fort Benton site. This small town is the county seat of Chouteau County. Nearby is the Highwood Mountains and Square Butte Recreational Area. In 1865, the U.S. army named it in recognition of Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri. |
