Exeter, founded in 1639, is by far the oldest and most historic of the small towns we recommend in New Hampshire. The picturesque Squamscott River flows through town. Exeter is the home of Phillips Exeter Academy, a private university-preparatory school. Exeter has a considerable inventory of structures by prominent architects. These buildings include The Old Public Library of 1894, Phillips Church, built in 1897, Tuck High School, built in 1911, the Swasey Pavilion at Exeter's town square (1916), the Academy Library (1971), and the towns war memorial (1922). This small town lies only 5 miles west of I-95 in southeast NH. The name of the town originated from the historic town of Exeter, in Devon, England. |
