This small town is located on the eastern banks of beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee. This lake is the largest (72 square miles) in the state of New Hampshire, the 6th largest lake in the United States and is surrounded by three mountain ranges. Sunset cruises aboard the Winni Belle leave from the Wolfeboro town docks each evening in the summer months. The Winni Belle is a 70-foot replica turn-of-the-century paddle-wheeled boat. Wolfeboro claims to be 'The Oldest Summer Resort in America'. This title reflects its early small town history as a popular retreat for residents of Boston and southern New Hampshire. In recent years, it has gained recognition as a retirement destination for people from all over the U.S. Wolfeboro is home to Brewster Academy, a private preparatory school. Wentworth State Park is also located here. The town charter was granted by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth in 1759, and named Wolfeborough in honor of English General James Wolfe, who was victorious at the Battle of Quebec in 1759. |
