Seated on the high-desert mesa at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Taos is known for its skiing and art. Both the University of New Mexico and Southern Methodist University have branch campuses in Taos. Because of the beauty of this small town and surrounding scenery, Taos has been a favorite film location for Hollywood producers. Its climate is semi-arid, resulting in low-humidity levels, with a 70% sunshine level and summer high temperatures in the low 80s. The high-elevation crisp air and mountain vistas make Taos ideal for a summer vacation stop. Taos is the County Seat of Taos County. The English name Taos derives from the native Taos language meaning "place of red willows".
For a scenic day trip through the historic villages between Taos and Santa Fe, consider taking the scenic 'high road' to Santa Fe. Drive south toward Espanola, turning south onto Highway 518 in Ranchos de Taos. This 1.5 hour drive takes you through several Spanish towns including Chimayo where you will find the Santuario de Chimayo. The dirt from its sacristy is credited with miraculous cures. Also along the way is Ranchos de Taos with its nineteenth century adobe Francisco de Asis Church, the old Spanish outpost of Truchas and the 1751 Village of Las Trampas.
