This small town is designated a National Historic Landmark village and is the county seat of Livingston County. Geneseo is the home of the State University of New York (SUNY), a liberal arts college that has an undergraduate population of approximately 5,000 students. Geneseo has a small historic district on Main Street, and at its center sits Bear Fountain. Just east of town is picturesque Long Point Park on the banks of Conesus Lake. Letchworth State Park, known as the ‘Grand Canyon of the East’, is 6 miles from town. Geneseo is a center of equestrian activities. This includes the Genesee Valley Hunt, the oldest hunt club in America. The English name "Geneseo" is an anglicization of the Iroquois name for the earlier Iroquois town there, Gen-nis-he-yo (which means "beautiful valley"). |
