Pittsford is an historic Erie Canal village with one of the oldest and best-preserved collections of 19th century structures in the Rochester region.  The village has been designated a National Historic Preserve America Community.  The appeal of this town is enhanced because the waterway parallels the downtown area.  A bicycle path and restaurants line the canal, and river cruises add to its entertainment value. Oak Hill Country Club, located in Pittsford, hosted the 1995 Ryder Cup; the 1956, 1968 and 1989 United States Opens; and the 1980 and 2003 PGA Championships. For the pleasure of visitors, the town provides a wonderful Walking Tour Map – one of the best we have seen in America. This small town was named by Colonel Caleb Hopkins, Pittsford's first town supervisor and War of 1812 hero, for the town of his birth, Pittsford, Vermont.
