Belmont, North Carolina

We highly recommend this small town as a day-trip from nearby Charlotte or Gastonia.
Belmont is home to Belmont Abbey College, a private liberal-arts college affiliated with the
Roman Catholic Church and the Order of Saint Benedict. The Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is
a 450-acre (1.8 km2) world-class botanical garden located on New Hope Road southwest of
Belmont. The Downtown Belmont Historic District has been listed on the National Register of
Historic Places since 1996. When you open the tall front door to the Stowe Mercantile Co.
general store, you will most assuredly experience a step-back-in-time transition to the retail era
of the 1800s. This small town is named in honor of August Belmont, a prominent New York banker. If you are visiting Belmont around Christmastime, stop in nearby McAdenville, which markets itself as ‘Christmas Town USA’. Photos are included in our website (McAdenville). Christmas Town USA gives more information on McAdenville’s Christmas festivities.
