Black Mountain was originally known as Grey Eagle to the Cherokee and Catawba Native Americans who lived and hunted there in great numbers. The Town of Black Mountain was founded in 1893 and was named for the Black Mountain range of mountains that border the town to the north. At the time of incorporation, Black Mountain had become a major pathway for westbound immigrants, commercial trade, and the mountain railroad. This strategic location helped establish Black Mountain as a prosperous and picturesque community.
