This small town is the county seat of Orange County. Although Hillsborough has its fair share of historic buildings and monuments, one of its more impressive facilities is also one of its newest – the Weaver Street Market , a community-owned, high-quality food store. Occoneechee Speedway, located just outside Hillsborough, was one of the first two NASCAR tracks to open and is the only track remaining from the inaugural 1948 season. The Historic Occoneechee Speedway Trail (HOST) is a three-mile trail located on 44 acres at the site of the former speedway. In 1766, this small town gained it’s current name of Hillsborough, after the Earl of Hillsborough, the British secretary of state for the colonies and a relative of royal Governor William Tryon. We highly recommend Hillsborough for a day visit from the Triangle urban areas.
