Sylva is the county seat of Jackson County, having taken over this responsibility from nearby Webster in 1913. It appears that this move was well deserved, as this small town chose for its new structure one of the prettiest settings for a courthouse in America. Sylva is home to Southwestern Community College (North Carolina) and is the closest town of size to nearby (6 miles / 9.7 kilometers) Western Carolina University, one of the seventeen schools of the University of North Carolina system. The town owns a pristine tract of land, Pinnacle Park, that boasts hiking trails, waterfalls, and a town view from a vantage point at 5,000 feet of elevation. The nearby Tuckasegee River is known for its whitewater and trout populations.  And the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is only a 30-minute drive away. Sylva is named for William D. Sylva, a Danish handyman who spent a month in the home of General E. R. Hampton.
