This village is dwarfed by the attractive surrounding Kenyon College. Gambier was named after one of Kenyon College's early benefactors, Lord Gambier. This campus is one of the most heavily-treed you will find. This college is a highly selective, private liberal arts school, founded in 1824, and has a current enrollment of 1,600. It is the oldest private institution of higher education in Ohio. The campus is noted for its Collegiate Gothic architecture and rustic setting. Old Kenyon Hall, built in 1827, is believed to be the oldest Gothic revival building in the Americas. The 2005 Princeton Review and Fiske Guide to Colleges 2005 awarded the college top academic ratings. In addition, in 2006 Newsweek selected Kenyon College as one of twenty-five "New Ivies". The Kokosing River, a tributary of the Ohio River, flows past Gambier. Gambier is 5 miles east of Mt. Vernon, in central Ohio.
