Nelsonville is best known for producing Star Brick from the abundant clay deposits in the surrounding Hocking Hills topography. Not surprisingly, the appeal of this town is enhanced due to its numerous brick structures and all brick paved streets. Nelsonville is organized around a public square, where every month a "Final Friday" celebration is held, featuring local artists. Also located on the square is the recently renovated Stuart's Opera House, built in 1879. The Hocking Valley excursion train stops in Nelsonville and offers 14-mile and 22-mile trips along the scenic Hocking River and Hocking Valley. Hocking College is located in Nelsonville. First settled in 1814 by the Daniel Nelson family, Nelsonville was incorporated in 1838 with Charles Cable as its first mayor.
