Oxford is a college town dominated by Miami University. With a town population of 22,000 and a student enrollment of 14,000, the university plays a major role in the society and economy of the municipality. The college is best known in the sports world as the ‘Cradle of Coaches’, because of the number of those who attended the school and later became head coaches at large universities and professional teams. The small downtown has a movie theatre and several restaurants and pubs that cater to the tastes of college students. On Route 27 south of town, a canoe and kayak livery provides excursions on the Great Miami River. Nearby Hueston Woods State Park offers hiking and biking, and a 635-acre lake affords a marina with boat rentals, fishing, swimming (public beach), camping and picnicking. An 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course is also available. Free summer concerts are held at Oxford Uptown Parks, located at High and Main St. in the center of downtown. |
