In 2010, Wellington was named the "Best Old House Neighborhood" for the state of Ohio by This Old House Magazine in their annual feature article. With nearly 200 structures listed in the national historical record, Wellington is commitment to protecting its strong architectural heritage. The Main Street Wellington program is dedicated to the preservation of this small town's bounty of historic buildings and common areas in its commercial district. Between 1868 and 1910, Wellington was known as the 'Cheese Capital of the World', because of the surrounding dairy farms and 40 cheese factories. The Wellington Cheese Festival is celebrated the third weekend of every July. Wellington also is home to an excursion railroad, the Lorain and West Virginia Railway. The name of this small town evenutually became Wellington by the townspeople in honor of one of the founders, William Welling, and also "Iron Duke", the Duke of Wellington. |
