Guthrie, Oklahoma

When a Mother tries to instill patience in her child, she may recite the adage "Rome wasn't built in a day". But Guthrie was. At dawn on April 22, 1889, the present site of Guthrie was nothing more than a railroad water tower, surrounded by prairie grass. At noon, cannons were fired at the edge of a 2 million acre section of Indian Territory. This signaled the stampede of humanity and horseflesh known as the Oklahoma Land Rush. Within 6 hours, 10,000 ‘squatters’ were camped on the plateau above the Cimarron River. Guthrie was born. |
