When a Mother tries to instill patience in her child, she may recite the adage "Rome wasn't built in a day". But Guthrie was. At dawn on April 22, 1889, the present site of Guthrie was nothing more than a railroad water tower, surrounded by prairie grass. At noon, cannons were fired at the edge of a 2 million acre section of Indian Territory. This signaled the stampede of humanity and horseflesh known as the Oklahoma Land Rush. Within 6 hours, 10,000 ‘squatters’ were camped on the plateau above the Cimarron River.  Guthrie was born.
Guthrie was the first capital of the Oklahoma Territory. It is now the largest historic district in the United States, containing 2,169 buildings spread over 400 city blocks. Guthrie proclaims itself the ‘bed and breakfast capital of Oklahoma’. The Masonic Temple in town claims to be the world’s largest conservatory. Guthrie is home to several museums, including the Oklahoma Territorial Museum. The town also hosts the Oklahoma International Bluegrass Festival, drawing 15,000 visitors. EARNS OUR HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.
