This small town is just 2 miles west of Interstate 84 in remote, arid northeast Oregon. The town is situated in a valley between the Wallowa Mountains to the east and the Elkhorn Range (part of the Blue Mountains) to the west. The Powder River runs through the center of downtown on its way to the Snake River. Baker City has considerable western U.S. historical significance, since it lies on the Oregon Trail, the famous 19th century pioneer migration route. The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center and the Oregon Trail Regional Museum are dedicated to the education of this important aspect of western history. During the 3rd weekend in July, the town hosts the Miners' Jubilee, which celebrates its mining history. Baker City is primarily a farming/ranching community. The town and county were named in honor of the English-born U.S. Senator Edward Dickinson Baker from Oregon.
