Bandon is a coastal community just south of where the Coquille River empties into the Pacific Ocean. This small town has plenty of amenities. The tiny old town district has several restaurants, coffee shops, speciality stores and a glass-enclosed picnic shelter on a boardwalk along the bay. After walking the tiny town, be sure to visit the Bandon Marsh Wildlife Refuge just north of downtown. The 889-acre preserve is a must see for bird watchers and nature lovers.
Other than tourism, Bandon is known for its cranberry production. More than 100 growers harvest about 1,600 acres (6.5 km2) around Bandon, raising 95 percent of Oregon's Cranberries. The annual Cranberry Festival takes place in the second weekend of September to celebrate the beginning of the cranberry harvest. Bandon has long been known as the "Cranberry Capital of Oregon". The Coquille River Lighthouse is on Coquille River's north jetty at Bullards Beach State Park. This small town was named by George Bennet, an Irish peer, who settled nearby in 1873 and named the town after Bandon, Ireland, his native home.
