The traditional economy of this area depended on logging, commercial fishing and agriculture. But due to its scenic location and temperate climate, its modern-day commerce revolves around tourism and retirement, since retirees constitute one-third of the population. Historic Old Town Florence is situated along the beautiful Siuslaw River. A leisurely stroll along the boardwalk is a popular tourist activity. At the south end of Florence, a dramatic shift in topography takes place - with 42 miles of wind-sculpted sand dunes, some towering 500 feet above sea level. The Oregon Coast Trail passes through Florence and is enjoyed by hikers, bicyclists and horseback riders. Sea Lion Caves, Heceta Head Lighthouse and Cape Perpetua are some of the attractions to be enjoyed while visiting this small town. Popular lore holds that the city was named for state senator A. B. Florence, who represented Lane County from 1858 – 1860. Another theory is that Florence was named for a French vessel that was wrecked at the mouth of the Siuslaw River in 1875. |
