Grants Pass is blessed with surrounding mountain scenery and the Rogue River flows through this small town. This river is a popular waterway for boating /fishing enthusiasts and jetboat tourist excursions. Grants Pass is the county seat of Josephine County.  It is located in the southwest corner of Oregon and has convenient access to I-5. The town praises its desirable climate, but in my opinion, it is just as cloudy and dreary for many months of the year as the rest of the western coastal region of Oregon. If you want to avoid this type of climate, it is necessary to venture just east of Grants Pass, in order to enjoy the transition area to a drier, sunnier climate. The Oregon Caves National Monument is located 30 miles south of town. This site in the northern Siskiyou Mountains encompasses 488 acres and is known primarily for its marble caves. The Grants Pass post office was established on March 22, 1865. According to town officials, its name was in recognition of Ulysses S. Grant for his victory at Vicksburg during the Civil War.
