photographs for town maps for town small town summary

Originally named Silver Lake and Lake City, in 1880 the city formally named itself for Nez Perce Chief Joseph. As a result of the extremes of topography dictated by the Hells Canyon and Joseph Canyon gorges, this is one of the most inaccessible regions in the U.S. The roads to Joseph from both north and south are treacherous, therefore I recommend access from the west (Route 82). Hells Canyon Mule Days is a three-day fun family show with events and classes for every age and skill level. The event includes a non-motorized parade, quilt show, exhibits and western art, cowboy poets gathering, mule and horse sales and pit BBQ.
