Abbeville, South Carolina
(pronounced abbey-ville)

Abbeville was established by French Hugenots in 1764 and is the county seat of Abbeville County. When we last visited, the town was in the midst of some extensive beautification efforts. But these labors are merely ‘icing on the cake’ for an already distinctive town square. The showcase of its historic district is the impressive 1908 Abbeville Opera House - just one of many unusual structures to be found downtown. Abbeville is part of the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor which stretches from the coast near Charleston to the mountains of Oconee County. |
