Summerville, South Carolina
|
|
Summerville is known as 'Flowertown in the Pines'. The annual Flowertown Festival is held each April in (appropriately) the Summerville Azalea Park. It is the largest arts and crafts festival in South Carolina. The annual patriotic celebration Red, White and Blue on the Green is held on July 4 in and around Hutchinson Square. For the last ten years each May, the Sculpture in the South exhibit and sale has been held in Azalea Park. The town offers one of the finest sports facilities in the greater Charleston area. The Jerry Blackwell Sports Complex at Gahagan features six lighted softball/baseball fields and a children's climbing structure playground. There is also a lighted combination football/soccer field with a press box and concession stand. The town's name is evocative of its history. Situated on a pine-forested ridge, it was first inhabited in the late 1700's as Charlestonians and other inhabitants of the SC Lowcountry sought respite from the summer heat, mosquitos and disease. |
