York, South Carolina

This small town is the county seat of York County, being close to the geographic center of the county. While it is not the most attractive of the towns we have visited in South Carolina, York does have some appealing brick architecture in its downtown. Some of the small towns more impressive structures are the Rose Hotel built in 1852, the First Presbyterian church built just after the Civil War and the 1914 York County Courthouse.
In 1976, as part of the National Bicentennial, downtown York was designated a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, and is one of the largest historic districts in the state, consisting of 340 acres (1.4 km2) and containing over 180 historic structures and landmarks. This small towns name was changed to Yorkville when it became the county seat in 1785. In 1915, it was shortened to York. |
