In 1874, Colonel George Armstrong Custer led an expedition into the Black hills and announced the discovery of gold on French Creek near Custer. This triggered the Black Hills Gold Rush and gave rise to the lawless town of Deadwood, which quickly reached a population of 5,000. Famous western characters Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried in Deadwood. Because of its western aura, this small town has been the film location of several Hollywood movies. True to its heritage, Deadwood today has many gambling establishments. Deadwood is the northern terminus of the beautiful (but difficult) 114-mile-long Mickelson Bicycle Trail. Several manmade lakes in the area, including Sheridan Lake, provide fishing and swimming. Spearfish Canyon to the north of town is a favorite for rock climbing. During the winter there are two ski areas just a few miles outside of nearby Lead, SD - Terry Peak and Deer Mountain. Deadwood was named for the dead trees once found in its gulch. EARNS OUR HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.
