Visitors to the courthouse square can enjoy attractive brick architecture that is handsomely accented with ornate wrought iron. As a tribute to the musical heritage of this small town, several antique upright pianos are strategically positioned in the commercial district. Live music is provided on the square each Friday evening. Bolivar is the county seat of Hardeman County. The town was named for South American revolutionary leader Simón Bolívar, though the town's name is pronounced to rhyme with "Oliver".
