Bastrop, Texas

This small East Texas town lies along the famous Old San Antonio Road where it crosses over the Colorado River. Instead of tearing down the old iron bridge over the Colorado River, it has been restricted to use by pedestrians. We wish more iron bridges would be saved from destruction in this country. In 1979, the National Register of Historic Places admitted 131 Bastrop buildings and sites to its listings. This earned Bastrop the title of the "Most Historic Small Town in Texas". Nearby Bastrop State Park is approx. 6,000 acres and is the site of the famous "Lost Pines," an isolated timbered region of loblolly pine and hardwoods. We highly recommend this small town as a daytrip from Austin. Bastrop's namesake, Felipe Enrique Neri, Baron de Bastrop, was a Dutch businessman and landowner known for his assistance in the Anglo-American settlement of Texas. |
