Of the three small towns that we recommend in ‘Big Bend Country’, Fort Davis is our favorite. Fort Davis is the county seat of Jeff Davis County and home to Fort Davis National Historic Site. The McDonald Observatory of the University of Texas is located outside Fort Davis. Davis Mountains State Park, 2,700 acres in size, is located four miles northwest of Fort Davis. This small town derives its name from the adjacent military Fort Davis, which was established in 1854 and named after Jefferson Davis, who was then the Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce.
