Georgetown, Texas

This town has an attractive downtown square with the recently-restored 1911 Williamson County Courthouse as its centerpiece. If you enjoy history and beautiful woodwork, be sure to visit the interior of this courthouse. The first successful prosecution of the Ku Klux Klan occurred in this courtroom in 1923. While in Georgetown, bicycle the San Gabriel River path to Lake Georgetown. The spillway is accessible only by pedestrians, so you can enjoy a quiet view of the lake. Georgetown is the home of Southwestern University, a small Methodist-based liberal arts college. A popular tourist attraction, Inner Space Cavern, is a cave on the south side of town, just off Interstate 35. Georgetown is called the "Red Poppy" Capital of Texas for the many red poppy wildflowers planted throughout the city which bloom each Spring. Georgetown also holds a Red Poppy Festival in April each year. In 2008, Fortune Small Business Magazine named Georgetown the No. 2 best town in the nation to live and launch a business. Because of its proximity to Austin, Williamson County has experienced considerable growth. It is uncertain how much longer Georgetown will qualify for our 'small' town status. Georgetown was named for George Washington Glasscock who donated the land for the new town. |
