Where the mason in masonry comes from. You must have rocks in your head if you bypass the intricate stone craftsmanship displayed in the historic Mason Square. Mason is one of many Hill Country towns where the German immigrants proudly displayed their masonry skills. One of these stone structures houses the Mason Square Museum. Fort Mason Park is located south of downtown just off Highway 87 and offers the Comanche Creek Golf Course and RV facilities. One of the Mason's most famous natives was author Fred Gipson, revered for his novels Old Yeller and its sequel Savage Sam. Both novels eventually became popular Walt Disney films. A statue depicting a boy and his dog was erected in his honor in front of the town's library. The name of this small town was derived from the community that grew up around the military Fort Mason. This outpost was established on July 6, 1951, by the United States War Department as a front-line defense against Kiowa, Lipan Apache and Comanche Indians. |
