Bennington, Vermont
This small town is the home of the Community College of Vermont, Bennington College and Southern Vermont College. It is an arts and college town, but lacks distinctive architecture. By population, Bennington is the largest town in Southern Vermont, the third-largest town in Vermont (after Essex and Colchester). There are three historic districts within this small town: Old Bennington, Downtown Bennington and North Bennington. Of these, Old Bennington is the original settlement, dating back to 1761. Bennington is home to the Bennington Battle Monument, which commemorates the Battle of Bennington, fought during the Revolutionary War. This 306-foot-high stone obelisk is the tallest structure in the state of Vermont. This statue commemorates the Battle of Bennington, fought during the Revolutionary War. The Bennington Museum holds the largest collection of Grandma Moses art and memorabilia available to the public. Bennington is located on Route 9 in the far southwest corner of Vermont.
