Grafton, Vermont

The website for Grafton proclaims it to be “one of the prettiest villages in Vermont”. Having seen it with my own two peepers, I don't dispute this claim. A small arched stone bridge spans Saxtons River that runs through this picturesque town. Because of its charming setting, Grafton is a frequent backdrop for commercials and movies. Each summer since 1868, the Grafton Cornet Band performs on Sundays at the Village Green. Thanks largely to the efforts of the non-profit Windham Foundation, Grafton is one of the best preserved small towns in Vermont. The foundation has rehabilitated more than 50 historic buildings, including the Old Tavern at Grafton, a one-time stagecoach stop. The Grafton Village Cheese Company is a popular tourist attraction. The May 2003 issue of USA Weekend listed Grafton as one of The Ten Most Beautiful Places in America. The town was founded as Thomlinson, but renaming rights were auctioned in 1791. The high bidder, who reportedly offered "five dollars and a jug of rum," changed the name to Grafton after his home town of Grafton, Massachusetts. |
