Stowe is Vermont’s bicycling, skiing and hiking playground. This small town is a mix of old and new; a 200 year-old history blended with youth drawn to its many recreational opportunities. At an elevation of 4,393 feet, Mount Mansfield is Vermont's highest mountain. It is 15 miles northwest of Stowe. Stowe's economy is almost entirely tourism based. Numerous lodges, shops and restaurants serve the many visitors to this area. The Trapp Family Lodge, in particular, is a major draw. In the winter, Stowe Mountain Resort ski area is the community's largest employer. The Stowe Recreation Path, completed in 1989, is 5.5 miles long with an asphalt base. Popular activities on the path are biking, inline skating, and walking in the summer, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.
